high Beginning to Advanced
The reading strand of the Interactions Mosaic 4th Edition series addresses the academic reading needs
of students at five language proficiency levels. Each student
text contains theme-based chapters in which students steadily
improve their reading ability through the learning and applying
of reading skills and strategies.
Students are exposed to a variety of
reading genres including essays, interviews, speeches,
biographies, stories (fiction and non-fiction), news and
magazine articles, science and business texts, and poetry.
Access (beginning to high beginning) combines both the reading and writing strands in
one student text.
Interactions 1 (high beginning to low intermediate) exposes students to using context clues,
understanding verb prefixes and suffixes, summarizing,
comparison and contrast, connecting words and phrases,
recognizing the main idea, finding supporting reasons, making
inferences, and using context to identify meaning.
Interactions 2 (low intermediate to intermediate) exposes
students to using context clues, understanding idioms,
understanding meaning categories, summarizing, understanding
pronoun reference, using hyphenation, previewing vocabulary,
identifying main ideas, predicting reading content, skimming
for main ideas, scanning for information, understanding
conclusions, and distinguishing facts from theories.
Mosaic 1 (intermediate to high intermediate) exposes students to using prefixes and
suffixes, scanning for slang words, recalling definitions and
idioms, understanding business terms, identifying synonyms,
understanding figurative language, understanding irony,
interpreting charts, analyzing a line of argument, scanning for
facts, using headings as guides, forming key ideas, separating
fact from opinion, andidentifying quotations.
Mosaic 2 (high
intermediate to low advanced) exposes
students to choosing exact verbs and expressive synonyms,
recognizing dialectal differences, matching research terms with
contexts, selecting appropriate adjectives, distinguishing
shades of meaning, inferring the meaning of idioms and
expressions, inferring attitudes, identifying theme and irony,
interpreting metaphors, and describing point of view.
